Join me and discover the mystical underwater marine world at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. Recently I took my two grandsons, ages 3 and 5, to enjoy a day there. This marine life aquarium has exhibits that appeal to all ages and some have been introduced especially for the kids. The two they loved the most were the touch tanks and the Exploration building. My grandsons thoroughly enjoyed this outside exhibit, a "touch tank" that holds starfish, sea anemone and other marine life. The term "tank" is a little misleading--it's actually a grotto filled with colorful sea anemones and starfish the kids can touch, with eels and shark in the back that naturally touching would not be a good idea!!
The touch tanks are open for 20 minutes at a time and are supervised by an instructor who tells the kids all about this habitat for marine life and the underwater marine world that exists here. He makes it alot of fun for them with his funny stories and is there to make sure the kids don't touch something that may hurt them.Inside, the kids have just as much fun looking at the numerous natural habitat aquariums that can be found in every room. These hold various species of marine life and have information about each one.
A whole day could be thoroughly enjoyed just reading about all these interesting and colorful creatures.Adding to the mix,life-like three-dimensional representations of sea otters, seals, and bird life stimulate the imagination and encourage learning more.
Just to left of the entrance is the Exploration Center. Here the kids can experience hands-on education about our colorful marine life and marine life simulation and get a glimpse of how our underwater marine world functions. There is a walk through tank that the kids can climb in and be completely surrounded by fish.
Children are also taught the need for conservation and the effect we can have on the environment and ecosystem. One entire corner is a model of the L. A. Basin and interacts with the kids to demonstrate these different points. This is a wonderful place to bring the kids on one of your homeschooling field trips where they can have so much fun while learning! This underwater marine world at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, Cabrillo Beach has so much to offer! We all had a wonderful day and look forward to coming back!
